Santa Clara

Santa Clara is the capital of the Villa Clara Province. The city is situated in the central part of Cuba, and it has a population of 238 000 citizens. It is a cultural and trade centre with an airport. Up until the 19 century, the main occupation of the people here is the sugar plantations. The city was founded on the 15th of July 1689 by 175 settlers. Santa Clara is a municipal city. The current president of Cuba was born in the nearby city of Placetas.

The city’s name comes from the Cuban Revolution, and more precisely with the battle on the 26th of July led by the Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara. in 1988 they built a mausoleum in his honour, and in 1977 his remnants are moved here. In the mausoleum, you can see Che Guevera’s personal belongings. Che Guevara’s statue in Santa Clara also represents the Cuban Revolution.

Che Guevara’s movement started on the 26th of July with an assault – the train carrying provisions for the armies of the pro-American Batista regime was blown up by the Argentinian revolutionary and his supporters.

Another interesting thing to see in Santa Clara is the goats and the carts right in front of the city hall.

If you want to see the city from up above simply climb La Loma /the hill over the city/.
