“Daddy, will the train continue into the sea?” was the question a child asked his father when seeing the Railway station located meters off the Caribbean coast…

Batabano is a small seaside town rather unknown to the tourists and located in the Mayabeque Province 60 km south of Havanа and very close by sea to The Isle of Youth. Some locals joke that Batabano is the “Caribbean Venice”, although the smelly canals are the only thing in common between the two places.

I have flown over Batabano many times on my way for Cayo Largo, however, I have visited it only twice. Despite its location on the Caribbean shore, the town is rather unattractive but with a good beach. Batabano is also a fishermen’s town so here you can buy seafood directly from the locals. Additionally, the lands in the district are very fruitful, therefore all of its 8000 citizens live mainly on farming or work at the harbour.

You can reach Batabano easily by regular bus.
