Cuba gas two currencies – Peso Cubano and Convertible Peso /the special currency for foreigners/. As a tourist, most of the time, you can use both, although at state restaurants they rarely accept Convertible Peso, and if they do the exchange rate they offer is usually quite unfavourable for the client – 1:21.

If you are in a local store and want to buy rice or beans, for example, they will require a card that you as a foreigner don’t have. However, this may happen mainly in the province. Most of the stores in Havana are well-supplied and use the other currency /Convertible Peso/.

Keep your eyes open for the special Cuban booths for meat and bananas. No newspapers there.
