The Oldest Bridge in Cuba

The oldest bridge in Cuba was built during the colonial period in Sancti Spiritus town. The location of the bridge was also known as the carts way. 



The bridge was built over Yayabo river and was finished in 1831 by Don Domingo Valverde and Don Blad Cabrera. Nearly 200 000 bricks were laid according to a traditional technique with sand, lime, water, and ass’s milk for more rigidness. 

The bridge was built through the forced labour of convicted and slaves. It has 5 arches, it is 60 m long, 6 m wide and 3,40 m high. In 1955 the bridge is announced as a historical heritage and cultural monument of Cuba. The bridge is a symbol of Sancti Spiritus town.
