Matanzas – the Romance of the Province

Matanzas is also known as the city of the bridges and rumba. The bridges here are needed because of the many rivers passing through. The name “Matanzas” comes from the verb “matar” which means “to kill” chosen because of the brutal massacre of the Spanish towards the Taino Indians during the colonial period.

In the city centre you will see the fire station hosted by a beautiful colonial building. The road of Matanzas has been fought out during the 70s of the last century and curves through several spectacular bridges.

The city is located 100 km away from Havana, so if you have headed to the biggest Cuban resort Varaderо you will surely stumble upon Matanzas. It boasts the charms of the typical provincial colonial city.

Here you can come across a man riding a bicycle and dragging a huge leg of pork.

Here you can also visit the highest aqueduct in Cuba Puente De Bacunayagua.

Another interesting site on your way to Matanzas is the mouth of Canimar river.
