Cayo Saetia – one of Fidel Castro’s favourite places

Cayo Saetia is a relatively unknown beach destination in Cuba. Its location and beauty are incredible – it is not surprising that the Cuban leader, who changed the world – Fidel Castro, used to have a country house here – a place to distance himself from the rest of the world. Speaking of Fidel Castro, I am reminded of one more of his favourite places, which is situated more than 1000 km west next to Vinales – The Mural of Prehistory.

I can guess you haven’t heard of Cayo Saetia? The reason for my assumption is that the most popular Cuban beach destinations are Varaderо, Cаyo Santa Maria, and Cayo Largo. Actually, in Cuba they use the word “cayo” for a small island, so you don’t be surprised to find out that Cayo Saetia is as big as 42 sq km. The island is located 120 km south-east of  Holguin at the entrance of the Nipe Bay. There is no other place in Cuba, where you can experience a genuine African safari with antelopes, zebras, and ostriches.

There is only one hotel on Cayo Saetia – Villa Cayo Saetia, where El Comandante Fidel Castro himself used to spend his vacations.

A hotel-bar with a view of the enchanting Caribbean beaches. And not only…

To reach Cayo Saetia, head for Holguin all the way to Cueto, then pass through Mayari and drive along the sea road. If you happen to forget these directions, simply remember the popular hit and the Cuban music emblem Chan chan by Buena Vista Social Club, where they sing: “Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí”, in translation: “I’ve arrived in Cueto, I am passing through Mayari”.
